The Magellan project:
The MAGELLAN project will create, for the first time in Europe, a direct collaboration between materials scientists, designers, manufacturers, recyclers and end users, to design and demonstrate at TRL7 (Technology Readiness Level), a disruptive, sustainable and cost-effective rare earth element (REE) permanent magnet (PM) value chain solution for high volume electric vehicle traction motors (EVTM), including:
  1. Technology and demonstration at TRL7 of an integrated highly advanced recycling and manufacturing process for improved resource efficiency of small loop recycling based on alloy-to-magnet, neodymium substitution and functionally patterned permanent magnet (PM) fabrication via powder injection molding
  2. Development of a new high-volume electric vehicle traction motor rotor design EVTM that benefits from an advanced patterned permanent magnet (PM) to improve assembly, improve motor performance and facilitate end-of-life motor disassembly resulting in improved economic efficiency and reduced loss of materials during recycling.
  3. Optimizing magnet recovery and recycling to avoid undercycling by minimizing dispersion and dilution of heavy rare earth elements (REE). Implementation of characterization and decision-making protocols for the orientation of recovered magnets to the most appropriate recycling route. Support standard magnet marking.

The MAGELLAN project will demonstrate the TRL of high-recycling permanent magnet (PM) prototypes in a high-volume EVTM electric vehicle traction motor in a representative operating environment.

Sustainability and business benefits will be demonstrated through life cycle analysis.
