Sustainable Maritime Transport: Technologies for Eco-Friendly Shipping to Support Coastal Communities
Electric Blue is a Horizon Europe project accelerating the transition towards zero-emission waterborne transport. The project will upgrade the Finnsirius RoPax ferry with a large-scale hybrid battery system, supported by AI-driven energy management, digital-twin solutions and advanced safety technologies. The aim is to increase the vessel’s electric range by at least 40%.
The project will also develop a modular 15 MW onshore power supply system, combined with stationary energy storage and intelligent charging strategies. Through replication studies involving a RoRo vessel and a cruise ship, ELECTRIC BLUE will assess how its solutions can be applied in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the Mediterranean, supporting the wider electrification of European shipping.
