Dr. Giorgos A. Demetriou is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Frederick University, Cyprus, and an affiliated researcher at the Frederick Research Center (FRC). He is the founder and director of the Robotics and Automated Systems Lab (RAS Lab) and co-founder of the Robotics Academy (Akadimia Rompotikis).
In 1998, he received his PhD in Computer Science with specialisation in Robotics from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (USA), with a dissertation on “Hybrid Control Architecture for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV).” He received his M.S. in Computer Engineering in 1994 and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1990 from the same university.
Prior to Frederick University, he served as Assistant Professor at the Computer Engineering Department of Purdue University (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and at the Computer Science Department of the University of Southern Mississippi-Gulf Coast, where he directed the Robotics and Graphics Laboratory.
He has received funding and participated in numerous research projects funded by the EU, the Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus (RIF), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and other organizations. He has published book chapters and numerous journal and conference papers. He has served as a reviewer for the IEEE Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems, the European Union, RIF, and other bodies.
His research interests include Marine Robotics Systems (USVs, ROVs, AUVs), sensor fusion, intelligent systems, autonomous robotic systems, control system design, and embedded systems.
Dr Demetriou has an excellent command of Greek and English.
At RTD TALOS, he leads the Robotics Team in the Technology Development Department.
